Cavalier Golfers Ready For ACC Championships

Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s golf team will play in the 60th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championships April 26-28 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. This marks the 12th consecutive year the tournament has been contested at the Old North State Club. The 54-hole event will start at 8:30 a.m. each morning.

Virginia is paired with North Carolina and NC State during Friday’s opening round. Those teams are set to tee off at 9:10 a.m. Virginia’s lineup includes Denny McCarthy, Mac McLaughlin, Ji Soo Park, David Pastore and Nick Tremps. McCarthy leads Virginia with a 72.69 stroke average while McLaughlin is second on the team at 74.12.

Both McCarthy and Park were in the UVa lineup for the ACC Championships last season when the Cavaliers placed second, seven strokes behind Georgia Tech. UVa’s Ben Rusch won the individual title at 10-under 206. He is redshirting this season and will not compete in the tournament.

A total of eight conference teams enter this weekend’s championship ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat standings. Georgia Tech tops that list in ninth place while Duke is 10th, Florida State is No. 13, Clemson is No. 29, Wake Forest is No. 37, Virginia Tech is No. 38, North Carolina is No. 42 and NC State is No. 45.

Wake Forest has won the tournament 18 times, the most of any ACC school. Virginia has never won the event but was the runner-up in 1958, 1996, 2010 and 2012. Pete Arend is the only Cavalier besides Rusch to win the individual title. He finished first at the1955 championship.
