CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded their final home meet of the season as the Virginia Challenge concluded Saturday at Lannigan Field. The event, in its second year, featured an elite field of collegiate and professional athletes, including 10 Olympians.

During the two days of competition, three Lannigan Field facility records were broken.

“This was a great meet for our student-athletes to finish the regular season,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “It was a great crowd tonight and we had great weather. We saw a lot of incredible performances, not only from our team, but from the athletes from other universities and the professionals. We continue to try and move in the right direction with every athlete in the program and we definitely made some big strides this weekend.”

The Virginia distance runners had several impressive results on Saturday evening. Thomas Porter won the men’s 10,000m in a time of 29:34.15, the sixth best time in school history. Vicky Fouhy shined in the women’s 1500m, running the second fastest time in school history at 4:14.96. It topped her previous PR by over four seconds.

In the men’s steeplechase, Colin Mearns ran a PR of 9:00.36 to finish fifth. Anthony Kostelac ran a season-best 1:48.13 to finish second in the 800m invite.

In the afternoon sprints, the Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the women’s 100m with Jordan Lavender, Peyton Chaney and Danielle Williams the first three across the line. Lavender won the event in a wind-aided time of 11.58, while Chaney and Williams were 11.71 and 11.93 respectively.

The highlight of the afternoon events came in the men’s 110m hurdles, where former Purdue standout Josh Hembrough set a new deaf world record of 13.92.

The Cavaliers will return to action May 23-25 at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C.
