Auburn, Ala. – The 13th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished 11th at the NCAA East Regional that wrapped up Saturday at the Auburn University Club. The Cavaliers were not one of the eight teams from the site to advance to the NCAA Championships. UVa’s finish marks the first time in six years it will not participate in the NCAA Championships.

During Saturday’s final round Virginia shot 8-over 296, its best single-round score of the event, to finish at 30-over 894. Top-seeded Alabama won the regional at 20-under 844. Tulane was second at 852 followed by Arkansas and Oklahoma State (864), Texas (871), Northwestern (874) and UCLA (875). Auburn finished eighth at 13-over 877 to claim the site’s final spot to the NCAAs.

Virginia senior Brittany Altomare turned in the team’s top performance, shooting 1-under 215. She shot even par 72 during her final collegiate round.

Sophomore Briana Mao was 44th for the Cavaliers at 7-over 223. She posted a final round score of 74. Junior Portland Rosen was one shot behind Mao on the leaderboard at 8-over 224 to finish 51st. She shot 75 during the final round.

Elizabeth Brightwell was 108th overall at 238 and senior Nicole Agnello was 110th at 240. Brightwell shot 81 on Saturday while Agnello had her best round of the tournament, carding a 3-over 75 to end her collegiate career.

Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow took medalist honors at 13-under 203. Princeton’s Kelly Shon was second at 7-under 209 to earn on of the two individual qualifying positions from the regional to the NCAAs. Tennessee’s Erica Popson won a three-player playoff for the other individual position.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
