CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Former Virginia swimming standout and current UVa volunteer assistant coach Matt McLean (Class of 2011) won the men’s 200-meter freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte, which was held May 9-12 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.

McLean claimed the 200m free in a time of 1:49.02 against a star-studded field including Olympians Ryan Lochte, Connor Jaeger, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens, Joe Schooling and Charlie Houchin. He also finished third in the 400m free in a time of 3:51.57.

Rising junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) qualified for the finals of the women’s 100m fly and 100m back. In the 100m fly, she finished seventh in 1:01.74, while in the 100m back, she placed eighth in 1:03.89. Williamson will compete for the United States at the World University Games, to be held in Kazan, Russia, July 6-17.

Incoming freshman Leah Smith was third in the women’s 200m free (1:59.62) and 400m free (4:10.85) and fourth in the 800m free (8:34.34).

McLean will look to earn a spot on the U.S. World Championship team at the U.S. Swimming Championships, to be held in Indianapolis, Ind., June 25-29.
