EUGENE, Ore. – Virginia junior Abbey Karin competed in the javelin during the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Hayward Field. Karin placed 19th in the event as she made her NCAA Championships debut.

Karin threw 44.14m (144’10”) on her first throw of the competition, but was not able to better that mark with her next two throws. She finished ninth in Flight 1 of the event, but did not advance to the finals.

“Today was not an indication of how good a year it was for Abbey,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Producing a huge PR of 52m and making it to NCAAs for the first time were big accomplishments. The progress she made this year will prepare her for a great final year in 2014.”

The Cavaliers will have three more athletes compete at the meet. Thomas Porter races in the men’s 10000m on Thursday (10:15 p.m. ET), Barbara Strehler is in the women’s 5000m on Friday (9:15 p.m.) and Mark Amirault competes in the men’s 5000m on Saturday (6:23 p.m. ET).

Live results from the meet will be available on VirginiaSports.com. Thursday’s action will be broadcast online by ESPN3, while Friday and Saturday events will be broadcast on ESPNU.
