CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three student-athletes from the Virginia baseball team have earned spots on the 2013 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, announced Monday by the conference. Nate Irving (So., Yonkers, N.Y.), Whit Mayberry (R-Jr., Alexandria, Va.) and Scott Silverstein (R-Sr., Olney, Md.) each were honored. Irving and Mayberry were named to the team for the second time.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Irving hit .284 this year while starting and catching 56 of Virginia’s 62 games. He racked up 52 hits, including 11 doubles, while driving in 33 runs. He struck out just 17 times – second fewest among the team’s starters. He was named to All-Charlottesville Regional Team after batting .400 with a pair of RBI as UVa won the regional championship. Irving recently was invited to try out for the 2013 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
Mayberry was 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA this season as he returned to the mound following an injury which cut his 2012 season short. In 51 1/3 innings, he allowed 44 hits and just nine walks while striking out 34. Opposing hitters batted just .234 against him. He graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in commerce and will pursue a master’s degree in social foundations next year.
Silverstein had a strong senior season, going 10-2 with a 3.15 ERA. He became just the 10th pitcher in UVa history to record 10 victories in a season. Six of his wins came in ACC play, as he ranked fourth among all conference pitchers in that category. In 91 1/3 innings he gave up 93 hits and 28 walks while striking out 70. He was named to the All-Charlottesville Regional Team after throwing six shutout innings in a win over Elon. Silverstein earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies last year and will graduated in May with a master’s degree in education.
