July 3, 2013

Members of the Virginia baseball team are staying busy in various summer baseball leagues across the country as we head into the fourth of July holiday.

Competing with the Keene Swamp Bats, Nathan Kirby is the reigning NECBL Pitcher of the Week. Kirby struck out 10 in six shutout innings in a start against Sanford on June 24, then followed it up with two shutout innings on June 29 against Vermont. Kirby has racked up 21 strikeouts and allowed just eight hits and five walks in 15 innings over three appearances (two starts).

John LaPrise has been a standout for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League. The rising sophomore is batting a team-best .458 this year after going 5-for-5 on Tuesday evening against the La Crosse Loggers. In the past five games, LaPrise owns a pair of four-hit games as well as the five-hit contest.

Five Cavaliers are competing in the Cape Cod League. Derek Fisher is batting .323 for the Harwich Mariners; his average would rank among the top 10 in the league if he had registered enough at bats this year.

David Rosenberger has been strong on the mound for the Vermont Mountaineers of the NECBL. The southpaw is 1-0 with a 1.31 ERA in 13 2/3 innings over three appearances.

A pair of Cavaliers, Kevin Doherty and Cameron Tekker, also are pitching well for the Saratoga Brigade of the NYCBL. Both have pitched in five games; Doherty is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings, while Tekker has a 1.80 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings of relief work.
