Poindexter Named to Virginia High School Hall of Fame

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia assistant football coach Anthony Poindexter is one of seven individuals who have been selected to the 2013 Virginia High School Hall of Fame. The induction dinner will be held on Monday, October 14, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Charlottesville.

A native of Lynchburg, Va., Poindexter attended Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Va., where he played for coach Bob Christmas. A free safety and quarterback during his junior and season seasons, Poindexter was the Group AA Defensive Player of the Year in Virginia in 1993. He was a second-team All-America selection by USA Today and the Mid-Atlantic defensive player of the year by SuperPrep.

As a senior at Jefferson Forest, he made 168 tackles and had five interceptions. He rushed 142 times for 1,136 yards and completed 29 of 67 passes for 632 yards. Jefferson Forest compiled an overall record of 38-4 during his three seasons and won two Group AA state championships and was the runner-up once. Poindexter also played baseball in high school and was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 70th round during the 1994 Major League Baseball draft.

Poindexter is entering his 10th season as an assistant coach at Virginia. He coaches the UVa safeties and has previously worked with the Cavalier running backs.

A first-team All-American in both 1997 and 1998, he became the first two-time, first-team All-American in UVa history. He was the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and became just the third player in school history to earn first-team All-ACC honors three times. He finished his career ranked seventh in school history with 342 tackles.
