Four Cavaliers to Compete at World Under-23 Rowing Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Four current, former and incoming members of the Virginia rowing program are set to compete at the World Under-23 Rowing Championships, to be held in Linz, Austria, July 24-28.
Set to row for the United States is 2013 graduate Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and rising junior Lizzy Youngling (Westport, Conn.). Representing Great Britain will be rising senior Fiona Schlesinger, while incoming freshman Hannah Osborne will represent her native New Zealand.
O’Brien and Schlesinger will compete against each other in the women’s eight. Youngling will be competing in the women’s double sculls and Osborne in the women’s quadruple sculls.
O’Brien was a three-time CRCA First-Team All-American for the Cavaliers and was a part of the Varsity Eight all four years in Charlottesville, including the 2012 NCAA Championship boat. The 2012 USRowing Fan’s Choice Collegiate Rower of the Year won gold with the U.S. women’s eight at the 2012 World Under-23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Youngling was a part of the Second Varsity Eight that placed seventh at the 2013 NCAA Championships and a member of the V8 that won the 2013 ACC Championship and was named ACC Crew of the Year. Youngling represented America at the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Rowing Championships.
Schlesinger has been a part of the V8 her first three years at UVa and earned CRCA Second-Team All-South Region honors in 2013. A member of the 2012 national champion V8, Schlesinger has been a part of the ACC Crew of the Year two times. She represented Great Britain at the 2007 World Junior Championships.
Osborne, who will join the Cavaliers this fall, won the New Zealand Under-22 national title in the women’s single and finished second in the women’s eight and women’s pair. Osborne earned bronze in the women’s quadruple sculls at the 2012 World Junior Championships.
