The summer season is wrapping up for members of the Virginia baseball team as they compete in college baseball summer leagues across the country. The playoffs for most leagues either have begun or start in the next week, with the teams of 11 Cavaliers already qualifying for postseason play.

All five Cavaliers who are competing in the Cape Cod League will play in the league’s playoffs beginning Tuesday. UVa teammates will square off on opposing teams in the first round as Josh Sborz and his Orleans Firebirds battle the Harwich Mariners, featuring Cavaliers Branden Cogswell, Derek Fisher and Nick Howard in a first-round series beginning Tuesday at Orleans. Brandon Downes and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox play Chatham in the best-of-three first-round series.

UVa’s Nathan Kirby is pitching for the NECBL Western Division champion Keene Swamp Bats. He started the Swamp Bats’ playoff opener against the Holyoke Blue Sox, striking out a season-high 12 batters over 6 1/3 innings in Keene’s 5-4 win. Kirby had a fantastic regular season, going 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts); he struck out 60 batters in 43 innings. David Rosenberger also is having a solid summer with the Vermont Mountaineers, who finished second in the NECBL Western Division. He has registered a 2-1 record with a 2.64 ERA in eight outings (five starts).

Virginia’s John LaPrise continues to lead the Northwoods League in batting at .409. He holds a 36-point lead in the race for the league’s batting title. LaPrise’s Madison Mallards teammate Joe McCarthy has upped his average to .302 this summer, while Mike Papi, playing for the Lakeshore Chinooks, has raised his average to .324. Madison already has clinched a berth in the playoffs after winning the South Division’s first-half championship. Lakeshore holds a two-game lead in the race for the second-half South Division title.
