Bryan, Texas – The 16th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 10-over 298 and ended the first day of play at Texas A&M’s “Mo” Morial Tournament in fourth place. The 12-team field is competing at the Aggies’ Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.

Texas A&M grabbed the first round lead by shooting 2-over 290. Kentucky is in second place at 294.

Freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi and junior Briana Mao led Virginia during the opening round, both shooting 1-under 73. Diaz-Yi had three birdies on her final five holes, but a double-bogey on her second to last hole cost her a shot at breaking par during her first collegiate round.

Mao, an All-ACC selection last season, had two birdies to go along with three bogeys during her round. Both players are tied for 10th place.

UVa’s other scores included 4-over 76s by Elizabeth Brightwell and Lauren Coughlin. Portland Rosen finished the day at 7-over 79. Brightwell and Coughlin are tied for 29th while Rosen is in 50th place.

A trio of Cavaliers are competing as non-scoring individuals. Kaira Martin shot 76 and is tied for 29th, Alex Hershberger posted a score of 77 and is in 35th place and Evie Dole is 55th after shooting 80.

The second round of the tournament will take place Tuesday and the final round will be played Wednesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
