Cavaliers Play Host to NC State Friday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team opens its ACC home schedule Friday when it welcomes NC State to Klöckner Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. The Cavaliers (2-3, 0-2 ACC) picked up a 3-0 win over No. 23 George Mason Tuesday night, while NC State (3-1, 1-1 ACC) has not played since dropping a 1-0 home decision to then-No. 9 Clemson last Saturday.
Ticket Information
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors and faculty/staff. Group ticket orders of 20 or more tickets are $4.

Parking Information
Free parking is available in the University Hall, McCue and Cage lots as well as the Emmet/Ivy Garage. Parking will not be available in the John Paul Jones Arena lots on Friday.
Virginia-NC State Series
Virginia maintains a 46-17-7 lead in its series with NC State. The programs first met in 1949. UVa topped the Wolfpack 2-1 in double overtime last season in Raleigh on Darius Madison’s golden goal.
NC State’s last win in Charlottesville came on Oct. 25, 1980, a span of 16 matches. Virginia is 9-1-1 against NC State since 2004.
Last Time Out: Virginia 3, No. 23 George Mason 0
Virginia controlled possession throughout as it rolled to a 3-0 victory over No. 23 George Mason Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers handed the Patriots their first defeat of the season.
Virginia received goals from each of their starting forwards, Ryan Zinkhan and Darius Madison, while Brian James came off the bench and scored UVa’s second goal. Madison tacked on an assist on Zinkhan’s early goal.
The Cavaliers dominated play while racking up a 17-6 advantage in shots.
Plenty of Offensive Threats
Virginia has scored eight goals in five games this season. Seven different players have scored. UVa had 11 different goal scorers during the entire 2012 season. Brian James is the lone Cavalier with multiple goals (2).
Five Games, Five Ranked Opponents
Eleven of UVa’s 17 opponents this season are currently ranked or receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll. UVa’s first five opponents all are currently ranked in the NSCAA poll: Louisville (22), St. John’s (7), Clemson (13), Wake Forest (9) and George Mason (23). Those five teams have a combined 21-6-1 record this season.
UVa still has matches on the docket with North Carolina (1), Notre Dame (2), VCU (8) and Maryland (17). Boston College and Providence – both on the UVa schedule – also are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll.
Noting NC State
NC State enters with a 3-1 record and 1-1 mark in the ACC following a 1-0 home loss to then-No. 9 Clemson last Saturday. The Wolfpack out-shot Clemson 17-6, but gave up a goal just 28 seconds into the match and could not recover.
NCSU has conceded just two goals this year. Five players have scored this year for the Wolfpack; Gbenga Makinde holds the team lead with two assists. Fabian Otte has played all four games in goal and has recorded 12 saves and a pair of shutouts.

The Cavaliers are home again at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 24) against Providence. Virginia returns to ACC action next Saturday (Sept. 28), traveling to Syracuse for the first-ever match between the Cavaliers and Orange in men’s soccer.
