Virginia Defeats Seton Hall, 3-1, in Cavalier Classic Action

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team defeated Seton Hall, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20), Friday (Sept. 20) on the first day of the Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gymnasium.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we grinded it out and it’s good for us to learn how to win these types of games when we are not playing our best,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We’ll take it, put it behind us and now we move our focus to winning tomorrow’s match at noon (against Columbia).”
The Cavaliers (5-5) were led by freshmen Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.), who earned 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Junior Mallory Woolridge had a season-high of eight blocks, while senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tallied 23 digs.
Virginia outhit Seton Hall (3-6), .171-.114, and earned nine service aces to the Pirates’ two. Both teams had 14 blocks.
In the first set, the Cavaliers hit .083 with nine errors as the Pirates took advantage, winning 25-19. Virginia got off to a 7-0 start in the second set behind the serve of sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.). Kole earned five kills in the second frame and UVa held SHU to a -.114 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-16 win.
The third set was close at 18-17 UVa, but the Cavaliers used a mini run of 4-1 to extend the lead and go on to a 25-21 lead. In the fourth, Virginia limited Seton Hall to a .088 hitting percentage and earned a 25-20 Victory.
Simona Sekulova led the Pirates with 10 kills.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday when they face Columbia at noon and William & Mary at 7 p.m. Fans who attend Saturday’s UVa football game against VMI can bring their ticket stubs and receive free admission to either of Saturday’s volleyball matches against Columbia and William & Mary (based on availability).
