Cross Country Hosts Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia Cross Country teams return to action Saturday as they host the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. The Cavalier men and women will both host a strong field of competitors at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va., with both races featuring 11 regionally ranked teams.

The men’s 8K race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K race at 10:30 a.m. Admission is to the meet is free.

The No. 16 Cavalier men’s team is one of two nationally ranked teams competing, along with No. 11 Eastern Kentucky. Those two squads are the top two teams in the Southeast Region rankings, as nine of the top 15 regionally will be in action. No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Duke, No. 8 Liberty, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 10 High Point, No. 11 William & Mary and No. 14 George Mason are the Southeast Region ranked squads participating. They will be joined by Auburn (No. 5 in South Region), California (No. 8 in West Region), Mississippi and UNC Greensboro in the men’s race.

The women’s field includes six of the top 15 teams in the Southeast Region, including the fifth-ranked Cavaliers. No. 2 William & Mary, who is ranked No. 14 nationally, is competing, along with No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Eastern Kentucky, No. 13 UNC Greensboro and No. 14 Virginia Tech. Auburn (No. 10 South Region), California (No. 13 West Region), George Mason, High Point, Liberty, Mississippi (No. 6 South Region) and Navy (No. 6 Mid-Atlantic Region) round out the women’s field.

Last year, both the Virginia men’s and women’s teams finished third at the Virginia/Panorama Fields Invitational. The Cavalier men and women both last won the meet in 2011.

The meet is the last regular season home meet for the Cavaliers. Virginia will host the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regional at Panorama Farms on Nov. 15.
