CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s basketball team is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, released Thursday (Oct. 31).

The preseason AP top 25 ranking is Virginia’s first since being ranked No. 11 to start the 2001-02 season. The Cavaliers also return to the rankings for the first time since Feb. 27, 2012, when they were No. 24 in AP poll.

Virginia opens the 2013-14 season against James Madison on Friday, Nov. 8 at John Paul Jones Arena. Seniors Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) and Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) lead the Cavaliers, who are picked to finish fourth in the ACC. Harris was named to the All-ACC preseason team after earning All-ACC first-team honors last season.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to face six teams in the preseason AP top 25: No. 4 Duke (away Jan. 13), No. 8 Syracuse (home March 1), No. 12 North Carolina (home Jan. 20), No. 14 VCU (home Nov. 12), No. 20 Wisconsin (home Dec. 4) and No. 21 Notre Dame (away Jan. 28 and home Feb. 22).
