CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams announced its captains for the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons Thursday. The teams will be led by eight athletes, four men and four women, during the upcoming season.

The men’s captains are senior Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.), who were also the captains of this fall’s cross country team, along with senior high jumper Tommy DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) and junior multi-event performer Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.).

Women’s cross country captains, senior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) and junior Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.), are joined by senior javelin thrower Abbey Karin (Byfield, Mass.) and senior triple jumper Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas) to lead the track and field squads.

“I am very excited about the leadership this group brings, as our track & field captains join our cross country captains,” said director of track & field Bryan Fetzer. “Captains should be individuals that are trust worthy, driven, caring and will lead by example. Those characteristics describe each of our captains for this upcoming season.”

The Cavaliers open the indoor track and field season on Jan. 11 at the Clemson Invitational.
