CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team earned an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers will face Massachusetts in a first-round game on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Duke’s Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The winner of the UMass/Virginia game will advance to a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m., taking on the winner of Duke and New Hampshire.

“The team set their goals as soon as the season ended last year and they have worked diligently towards achieving their goals since,” said head coach Michele Madison. “We are excited to go down to Duke and open up the tournament with UMass.”

All seven ACC teams made the tournament with Maryland, Syracuse, North Carolina and Duke earning the top-four seeds and the right to host the first and second round games.

“I am very happy that all of the ACC teams were rewarded for a grueling season,” Madison said. “It was an extremely competitive year with ACC tournament seedings determined by goal differentials. Every one of us deserve to be in the tournament and I am positive everyone is very excited.”

The winner of each of the four sites will advance to the NCAA semifinals on Nov. 22 at Powhatan Sports Complex at Old Dominion University. The National Championship game will take place on Nov. 24 at Old Dominion.

This is the 19th trip to NCAA Tournament for the Cavaliers and their seventh in head coach Michele Madison’s eight seasons at Virginia. Last year, Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals before falling, 5-2, to eventual-national champion Princeton.
