COLUMBUS, Ohio—Three school records fell as the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished action on the first day of the Ohio State Invite Friday (Nov. 22).

The No. 12 Cavalier women lead after day one with 364 points, ahead of No. 5 Florida (336), No. 19 Ohio State (180.5), No. 16 Purdue (163.5) and Kentucky (112). UVa’s men, ranked 18th-nationally, are in third place with 268 points, behind No. 2 Florida (328), No. 10 Ohio State (286) and ahead of Kentucky (43).

Freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started the Cavalier banner day, winning the women’s 500 free in 4:36.19, an automatic NCAA-qualifying time and a new UVa record. Senior Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and sophomore Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) completed the Virginia 1-2-3, finishing in times of 4:42.34 and 4:42.51, the eighth and ninth-fastest times on UVa’s all-time list. Junior Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) was eighth in 4:46.94.

In the women’s 200 IM, the Cavaliers went 2-3-4-5, with junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) breaking the school record in 1:56.13. Freshman Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del. – 1:56.58), junior Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla. – 1:57.41) and sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich. – 1:57.45) were next, with Jones and Bartholomew’s times ranking third and fifth on UVa’s all-time list. Casey’s prelim time of 1:57.30, set earlier in the day, ranks fourth on the school’s all-time list. Sophomore Haley Durmer (Decatur, Ga.) was eighth in 2:00.80.

On the men’s side, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke the Virginia record on the 1-meter diving boards, winning with a score of 383.95.

Sophomore Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) placed third on the women’s 3-meter diving boards with a score of 306.45. Corbett’s prelim score of 312.15 ranks second on UVa’s all-time list.

The men’s 400 medley relay of senior Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.), sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland), junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) placed second in 3:11.09, the fifth-fastest time in school history.

Camp set the second-fastest men’s 200 IM time in school history in prelims (1:44.50) and placed third in the finals with a time of 1:45.70. Junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished eighth in 1:47.93 and senior Serge Gould (Bethesda, Md.) was ninth in 1:48.43. Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) posted a time of 1:45.66 in the B final, good enough for fifth on UVa’s all-time list.

Senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) placed fourth in the men’s 500 free in 4:19.44, while classmate Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) was eighth in 4:25.28.

In the women’s 50 free, freshman Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom) was fifth in 22.97, with Lloyd (23.11), senior Dana Nessler (Jacksonville, Fla. – 23.14), Moore (23.22) and freshman Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa. – 23.31) finishing 7-8-9-10.

On the men’s side, junior Jake Pearce (Tulsa, Okla.) was fifth in 20.34, while classmate Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.) and freshman Gabriel Espinosa (Phoenix, Ariz.) were seventh and 10th in 20.43 and 20.88, respectively.

In the first events of the finals session, the women’s 200 free relay of Thomas, Lloyd, Moore and Naurath finished second in 1:30.80, while the men’s relay of Pearce, Camp, Espinosa and Rommel was third in 1:19.69.

The action continues Saturday (Nov. 23) with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, men’s 3-meter diving, women’s 1-meter diving and the 800 free relay being contested. Prelims are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
