CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped a four-set match against Pittsburgh, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-8, Friday night (Nov. 29) at Memorial Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 17-14 on the season (10-9 ACC), while the Panthers improved to 18-14 (10-9 ACC).
Freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with 17 kills and no errors on 35 attempts for a .486 hitting percentage, while junior Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .471 with nine kills.
Pitt hit .371 for the match, compared to UVa’s .285, and had 11 service aces to the Cavaliers’ three.
With 21 digs, senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) became the seventh Cavalier to reach 500 digs in a season and now has 517 for the season, sixth-most in UVa single-season history.
Freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) moved into third place on the UVa freshman kills list with 417.
In the first set, the Panthers hit .378 and had a 24-21 lead when the Cavaliers were able to fight off two set points before falling 25-23.
The Panthers had a 17-11 lead when UVa went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 19. The Cavaliers used another run to open a 24-21 lead and went on to win, 25-23, on a Pitt service error.
In the third, Pitt used a five-point run in the middle of the set to open up a lead and never relinquished, winning 25-21. The Panthers hit .516 in the fourth en route to a 25-8 win.
Jessica Wynn led Pitt with 23 kills.
The Cavaliers conclude the regular season Saturday (Nov. 30) with a home match against Maryland at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
