CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 14 Virginia opened the 2014 ITA National Women’s Tennis Indoor Team Championships with a 4-2 loss against No. 2 Florida Friday (Feb. 7) at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Gators claimed the doubles point and three singles matches to improve to 5-0. Sophomores Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) earned singles wins for the Cavaliers (3-1).

Florida earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Virginia sophomores Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Epstein defeated Alexandra Cercone and Stefani Stojic 6-3 at No. 3. Olivia Janowicz and Kourtney Keegan then beat senior Li Xi (Kunming, China) and sophomore Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) 6-3 at No. 2 and Florida clinched the point with a 6-4 win from No. 32 Belinda Woolcock and Sofie Oyen over No. 8 Elbaba and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) at No. 1.

No. 11 Elbaba quickly tied it at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 17 Janowicz at No. 1 singles. No. 23 Cercone gave Florida a 2-1 lead by ousting No. 28 Collins 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 2. Epstein tied the score at 2-2 by defeating No. 39 Keegan 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

No. 18 Morgan gave the Gators a 3-2 lead with a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 43 Pierson at No. 3 before No. 36 Woolcock clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) at No. 6 singles.

Virginia plays Texas A&M in consolation action Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Dual matches are scheduled at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with the championship match set for 11 a.m. on Monday. Each of the 16 teams is guaranteed three matches during the championship. Fans can attend the four-day championship FREE of charge.
