No. 3 Virginia Plays at Syracuse on Saturday

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 3 Virginia women’s tennis team continues ACC action at Syracuse on Saturday, March 1. First serve at Drumlins Tennis Center is set for 11 a.m. The Saturday match marks Virginia’s first against the Orange in ACC action.
Virginia’s No. 3 ranking is a program-best, surpassing the Cavaliers’ No. 6 ranking in 2012. The Cavaliers (7-2) moved up 10 places from No. 13 to No. 3 in the latest ITA rankings after upsetting top-ranked Duke (5-2) and winning at No. 62 Boston College (6-1) last weekend. The Cavaliers’ win against Duke marked their second win against a top-ranked opponent in school history. Last season, Virginia defeated then-No. 1 North Carolina 4-3 in Chapel Hill.
The Cavaliers, who are 5-1 all-time vs. Syracuse, have four players ranked in singles and one tandem ranked in doubles. Sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) is ranked a program-high No. 4 in singles and No. 7 in doubles with freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.). Elbaba sports a sparkling 20-2 record, including an 8-0 dual mark at No. 1 singles. Elbaba and Pierson are 21-5 and 5-3 in dual action at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) is ranked No. 42 in singles, while Pierson is No. 47 and sophomore Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) is No. 58. Nauta is 17-4 overall and 7-0 in dual action. Pierson is 18-9 overall, while Collins is 16-8.
Sophomore Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) has added a 6-3 dual record, while freshman Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) is 4-2.
