CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-3, 0-1 ACC) closes out a five-game homestand by hosting No. 1 North Carolina (6-0, 1-0 ACC) on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
During halftime, there will be a special ceremony recognizing the Women’s 2004 Championship team with members of the squad being introduced on the field.
Virginia is playing its fifth-straight home game and its fifth game of the season against a top-10 ranked opponent. Virginia is 2-2 at home and 1-3 against ranked opponents this season.
North Carolina holds a 19-12 advantage in the all-time series against Virginia and has won the last eight meetings and 10 of the last 11. The two teams met twice last year in Chapel Hill, N.C., with the Tar Heels edging Virginia 8-7 in the regular-season meeting and UNC winning 13-9 in the NCAA quarterfinals, eliminating UVa from the post season. Virginia’s last win in the series was a 13-12 overtime victory in Charlottesville during the 2010 season.
The Cavaliers moved up to No. 8 in the IWLCA poll after defeating then-ranked No. 8 Penn State, 12-11, last Saturday. Virginia also moved up to No. 11 in the Brine/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. North Carolina, the defending-National Champion, have been ranked in the top position since the preseason.
North Carolina is averaging 19.3 goals-per-game while the Cavaliers are averaging 13.6 per game. UNC is shooting 54.7 percent while UVa is making 41.2 percent of its shots. The Tar Heels and Cavaliers are 1-2 in the conference in ground balls with UNC averaging 23.6 and UVa 22.2.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) snapped her streak of four-consecutive games scoring at least a hat trick with a two goal performance against Penn State. Swan is ranked fourth in the conference and 25th in the nation, averaging 3.4 goals per game. Swan is second in the ACC and ninth in the nation in draw controls, averaging 5.8 per contest. Swan is also ninth in the ACC, averaging 4.40 points per game.
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) had her third four-goal performance of the season against Penn State. Blue is 10th in the ACC in goals, averaging 2.80 per game.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) continues to leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 10.60 per contest, ranking her seventh in the country. Colgan also paces the conference in ground balls, averaging 3.20 per game.
The Cavaliers will play a pair of road games next week, taking on William & Mary on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va. before heading to Princeton, N.J. to face the Princeton Tigers on Saturday, March 15 at 12 p.m.
The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium on Wednesday, March 19 when they host James Madison at 7 p.m.
Single-game reserved seats are available for all women’s home games for $7. Single-game general admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
