CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 6 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-4, 0-2 ACC) plays two road games this week beginning with a match-up against William & Mary (1-3, 0-0 CAA) on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
Virginia leads the all-time series against William & Mary 30-17-1, having won the last 12 meetings and 18 of the last 19 match-ups. The Tribe’s last victory came in the season-opener of the 2001 campaign when No. 19 William & Mary upset No. 7 Virginia, 13-10, in Williamsburg. Since 2007, Virginia has only lost three times to unranked opponents, going 47-3 in that span against teams not ranked in the top-20.
Despite a 14-10 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday (March 8), Virginia moved up two spots to No. 6 in this week’s IWLCA Coaches Poll. This is only the second game of the year for the Cavaliers against an unranked opponent. Virginia defeated unranked Richmond, 18-9, on Feb. 19.
The Tribe are 0-2 this season against ACC schools with an 11-8 loss to Duke and a 19-3 loss to Maryland. W&M owns a 35-71 all-time record versus teams currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference. William & Mary’s lone victory this season came in a 12-8 contest against Coastal Carolina.
William & Mary senior Jenna Dougherty leads the team with six points (six goals), while senior Bridget Brown (four goals, one assist) and sophomore Zoe Boger (three goals, two assist) have totaled five points apiece. Senior Hannah Clarke leads the Colonial Athletic Association in caused turnovers per game (2.5), while junior Ellen Shaffrey is third in draw controls per game (3.5). The Tribe currently ranks second in the conference in caused turnovers per game (10.5).
Virginia is averaging 13.0 goals per game while William & Mary averages 7.0. UVa is averaging 20.6 ground balls per game while W&M averages 14.0.
Cavalier senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) averages 12.5 saves per game, while the Tribe’s three goalkeepers have combined to average 8.0 per game. Colgan ranks second in the nation in saves per game. Kai Murphy of UC Davis is the only goalie with a higher per-game average at 15.50.
Colgan logged 22 saves against North Carolina, the highest single-game save tally this season by an ACC goalie. It was also the highest number of saves in a game for a Cavalier goalkeeper since Michelle Cusimano logged 26 saves in the 14-13 overtime loss to Princeton in the 1994 NCAA National Semifinal game. It was only the 11th time in school history that a goalkeeper logged more than 20 saves in a single game.
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) had her fourth hat trick of the season against North Carolina. Blue is ninth in the ACC, averaging 2.83 goals per game.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) is fifth in the ACC and 28th in the nation, averaging 3.0 per game. She is 12th in the ACC and 50th in the nation in points per game, averaging 3.83.
Junior Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) has posted five-straight multi-goal games after going scoreless in the opener against Northwestern.
Freshman Maggie Preas (Rockville, Md.) had three ground balls and a caused-turnover against North Carolina.
Senior Lauren Goerz (Danville, Ca.) scored her second goal of the season (third of her career) against North Carolina, also winning two draw controls, causing a turnover and picking up a ground ball.
The Cavaliers close out the week by heading to Princeton, N.J., to face the Princeton Tigers on Saturday, March 15 at 12 p.m.
The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium on Wednesday, March 19 when they host James Madison at 7 p.m.
Single-game reserved seats are available for all women’s home games for $7. Single-game general admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
