Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s golf team plays its second tournament of the week when the Cavaliers open play Friday at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. The three-day, 54-hold event is held at the par-72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club.

Hosted by Georgia Southern, the tournament is named after former Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster Chris Schenkel.

The field for the Schenkel Invitational includes: UAB, Central Florida, Charleston, Duke, Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, NC State, North Florida, North Texas, Texas and Virginia.

Virginia will field the same lineup it did earlier in the week when the Cavaliers opened the spring by finishing second at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. Freshman Derek Bard led UVa at that event with a runner-up performance. Denny McCarthy placed fourth and Ben Rusch was 14th. Rounding out the UVa lineup will be Nick McLaughlin and Jimmy Stanger. David Pastore will compete as a non-scoring individual.

Last year Alabama won The Schenkel by shooting 16-under 848 behind tournament medalist Justin Thomas’ score of 9-under 207. Virginia was 11th at 891.
