Charlottesville, Va. – Coming off a pair of top-five finishes during its spring break week, the No. 10 Virginia men’s golf team will compete at the Hootie @Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C. starting Sunday. The 54-hole tournament runs through Tuesday at the par-72, 7,282-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.

The event is named for country music entertainer Darius Rucker, the former front man for the popular band Hootie and the Blowfish.

Of the 15 teams in this week’s field, five are ranked in the Golfstat Top 50, including tournament host South Carolina at No. 24. Also ranked are No. 30 Auburn, No. 36 Kentucky and No. 39 Wake Forest, while USC Aiken is the fifth-ranked team in Division II. Akron, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Duke, GRU Augusta, Mississippi, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest round out the field.

The first round will get underway at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Cavaliers will start play at 10:50 a.m. and are paired with Missouri and USC-Aiken.

UVa’s lineup features Denny McCarthy, David Pastore, Ben Rusch, Jimmy Stanger and Derek Bard. McCarthy leads the team with a 70.72 stroke average and is ranked No. 14 in the latest Golfweek poll and No. 16 in the Golfstat standings.

McCarthy placed seventh at last year’s tournament at 3-over 219. Virginia was 14th in the 15-team field.

Stanger led UVa in its last outing, placing third overall at the Schenkel Invitational.
