Virginia used two four-run innings to break open the first game. Junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) had two hits and three RBI, while senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) each drove in two runs.

The Patriots (8-13) lost both games of a doubleheader at St. Joseph’s, 9-6 and 1-0, last Saturday. Tiffany Webb leads GMU with a .426 batting average, while Brooke Blankenship leads the team with 15 RBI.

Virginia swept a doubleheader between the two teams, 8-0 and 15-3, last year in Fairfax, Va.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to ACC-newcomer Pittsburgh for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday (March 29-30). Saturday’s doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday’s game is scheduled for noon.
