Virginia Men Start NCAA Championships Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team begins action at the NCAA Championships Thursday (March 27) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The national meet runs Thursday-Saturday (March 27-29) and will have prelims (12 p.m.) and finals (8 p.m.) each day. ESPN3 will carry a live broadcast of the finals sessions on Friday and Saturday. Live results for the meet will be linked on VirginiaSports.com.
The Cavaliers will be represented in individual swimming events by seniors Jan Daniec, Nathan Hart, Jack Murfee and Brad Phillips, juniors Kyle Dudzinski and David Ingraham and sophomores Yannick Kaeser and Luke Papendick. Virginia also qualified four relays. This group joins junior diver JB Kolod who qualified for the national meet after winning the 3-meter diving event at the NCAA Zone A Championships on March 10.
Daniec, a 2011 honorable mention All-American in the 500 free, will compete at the national meet for the third time, while Ingraham, Murfee, Papendick and Phillips have qualified for the second year in a row. Dudzinski, Hart and Kaeser will make their NCAA meet debuts.
Papendick, the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, earned honorable mention All-America honors last season after winning the consolation final in the 200 back, to finish ninth overall.
Senior Taylor Grey, juniors Jake Pearce and Charlie Rommel and freshman Matt Lockman will also travel to Austin as alternates that can be used in relays. Grey is a two-time All-American with Cavalier relays. Rommel is a relay alternate for the second year in a row, while Pearce and Lockman will travel to the national meet for the first time.
The Cavaliers finished fourth at the 2014 ACC Championships where Phillips (1,650 free) and Papendick (200 back) each picked up individual conference titles.
Virginia’s highest-ever finish at the NCAA meet was eighth in 2011.
