Kaeser Breaks 200 Breast Record on Final Day of NCAAs

AUSTIN, Texas—The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team finished action at the NCAA Championships Saturday (March 29) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The Cavaliers finished the meet in 26th place with 23 points. California won with 468.5 points, ahead of Texas (417.5), Florida (387), Michigan (310) and Georgia (259).
“We had some good performances this weekend, but overall I’m disappointed with the results,” UVa head coach Augie Busch said. “The team’s performance starts with me and from the top all the way down, we need to do a better job of preparing ourselves for this meet.”
Following his seventh-place finish on the 3-meter diving boards Friday night, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) continued his success at the meet, claiming 10th in platform diving with a score of 389.00 in the consolation finals. The score is less than a point off the school record (389.85). Kolod’s 10th-place finish is the second-highest UVa diving finish at the national meet and is the third time he has scored in the top 16 on the national stage.
“JB put together an excellent meet,” UVa head diving coach Jason Glorius said. “He was able to focus and rise to the occasion after a rough start to his 3m event, something not many people could have done. His tower prelim performance was good enough to get him back to score for the team and his final was his best list ever as he hit everything. I’m just really happy for him and glad to see his hard work pay dividends for the team.”

Sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) placed 16th in the 200 breast in a time of 1:54.69. His prelim time of 1:53.71 broke the previous school record of 1:53.93, set by Ryan Hurley in 2009. Kaeser is also the first Cavalier to score in the event since Hurley in 2009.
In the 200 back, sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished 14th in a time of 1:41.69 to earn honorable mention All-America honors for the second consecutive year in the event.
Senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished 28th in the 1,650 free in a time of 15:10.83, while fellow senior Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) placed 30th in 15:15.25.
In prelims in the morning, senior Nathan Hart (Asheville, N.C.) finished 35th in the 200 fly, while junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) was 39th in 1:48.08.
Junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed 36th in the 200 back in 1:43.17, while senior Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.) was 41st in 1:44.86.
