Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 20 Virginia women’s golf team opens play at the NCAA East Regional Championship Thursday at the SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The 54-hole tournament runs May 8-10. The Cavaliers are the No. 7 seed in the field.
The top eight schools from each of three 24-team regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships along with the top two individuals not advancing from a team from each site. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Virginia will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the seventh time in the program’s 11-year history.

NCAA Regional History
This year’s NCAA East Regional marks the 10th straight year the Cavaliers have earned a postseason berth. Virginia has advanced through the regional to the NCAA Championships in five of the last six seasons and also in 2005. UVa’s top regional finish was a third-place showing in 2011. Last year the Cavaliers finished 11th at the East Regional in Auburn, Ala. Brittany Altomare led UVa by finishing 15th overall. In 2010, at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford, Calle Nielson took medalist honors by shooting 1-over 214. She is the only Cavalier to win a NCAA regional. Leah Wigger was the runner up at the 2005 East Regional held at the University of Florida Golf Course.
Regional Lineup
Virginia’s lineup for the East Regional will include seniors Portland Rosen and Elizabeth Brightwell, junior Briana Mao, sophomore Lauren Coughlin and freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi. Rosen, Brightwell and Mao were all in the UVa lineup for last year’s Central Regional.

The ACC Sends Nine
Virginia is one of nine ACC teams to receive an invitation to this year’s national championship. Duke is the No. 1 seed in the East while NC State is the No. 9 seed and host school Florida State is the No. 10 team. North Carolina is the No. 8 seed in the Central, Miami is the No. 10 seed at that site. Clemson is the No. 5 seed in the West while Wake Forest is the region’s No. 6 seed and Notre Dame is No. 18.
Familiar Ground
This will be the Virginia golf team’s second trip to the SouthWood Golf Club this season. The Cavaliers finished fourth in the 11-team FSU Match-Up tournament to open the spring season in mid-February. All five players in UVa’s regional lineup played in that event. Freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi led the Cavaliers by finishing seventh overall. Here’s a breakdown of their scoring:
