Tallahassee, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished sixth at the NCAA East Regional to earn a spot in the field for the 2014 NCAA Championships. The top eight teams from three regional sites advanced to the NCAAs.

Virginia will be making its seventh appearance at the NCAAs in the 11-year history of the program. The NCAA Championships will be contested May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Virginia shot 6-over 294 during Saturday’s final round for a three-day total of 5-over 869. The Cavaliers strong showing during Thursday’s opening round, shooting 5-under 283, paved the way for its qualifying effort. UVa’s first round score was its lowest ever for an NCAA regional event.

“This was a very difficult regional and I’m proud of the way our team performed and excited they’ll get to continue their season at nationals,” said UVa head coach Kim Lewellen. “The way we started out put us in a good position for the final two rounds, which turned out to be a good thing because we played the final two days at times when the winds were really up. It was good to have that cushion. The girls managed the course well and did a great job with their mental approach this week.”

Vanderbilt, ranked No. 12, won the regional at 24-under 840. Also advancing to the NCAAs from the East Regional were No. 5 South Carolina (854), No. 26 NC State (860), No. 2 Duke (860), No. 8 Stanford (866), No. 34 Tulane (871) and Campbell (879).

Virginia’s top individual finisher was sophomore Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.), who was 15th at 2-under 214. She shot even par 72 during the final round, recording a score of par on all 18 holes. It was Coughlin’s first NCAA regional tournament appearance.

Senior Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford, Va.) and freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) tied for 29th at 2-over 218. Both players finished the final round with scores of 1-over 73. Junior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) was 41st at 221 while Portland Rosen (Sugar Land, Texas) finished 108th at 233.

Vanderbilt’s Jenny Hahn took medalist honors at 9-under 207.
