IRVINE, Calif.–Former Virginia swimming standout Matt McLean (Class of 2011) won the men’s 200-meter freestyle national title at the Phillips 66 National Championships Thursday (Aug. 7) at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex.

McLean, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 4x200m free relay, captured the national championship in a time of 1:46.93. With the win, McLean will represent the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships, to be held Aug. 21-25 in Gold Coast, Australia. It is McLean’s second national title after winning the 400m free in 2011.

In the women’s 200m free, rising sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished third in a personal-best time of 1:57.57. Smith will also head to Australia to represent Team USA in the Pan Pac Champs.

Rising junior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) was eighth in the women’s 200m back in 2:13.49, while rising senior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) placed 14th overall in 2:15.23.

In prelims this morning, rising sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) touched 21st in the women’s 200m back. Rising sophomore Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) finished 24th in the men’s 200m back, while rising junior Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) was 30th. Incoming freshman Anthony Marcantonio (Centerville, Mass.) placed 64th.

Rising senior Shaun Casey finished 36th in the women’s 200m free prelims, while rising junior Natalie Martin (Haymarket, Va.) was 42nd in the women’s 200m breaststroke.

The national meet continues through Sunday, Aug. 10.
