CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia cross country teams received high preseason rankings Monday as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its regional rankings. The Cavalier women open the year at No. 1 in the Southeast Region, while the Cavalier men are No. 2 in the region.

The Virginia women, the reigning NCAA Southeast Regional champions, return five All-Region performers from last season in sophomores Maria Hauger (Shakopee, Minn.), Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontatio) and graduate student Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.). The Cavaliers are followed in the poll by Virginia Tech, NC State, William & Mary and Duke.

The Cavalier men finished second at last year’s NCAA Southeast Regional and open this year at No. 2 in the regional poll behind NC State. Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina and William & Mary round out the top five. Virginia returns two All-Region runners, juniors Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) and Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.).

The Cavalier cross country teams debut on Aug. 29 with the UVa Duals as Florida State, Liberty and Norfolk State, along with the women’s teams from Duke and James Madison, will compete in the meet. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m. at Panorama Farms.
