CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams were both selected second in the preseason poll of the league’s coaches, announced Thursday. The reigning champion Syracuse men and Florida State women were tabbed the preseason favorites.

The 2014 ACC Championships will be held on Oct. 31 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville. It marks the third time the course has hosted the meet, as it was also the site of the 2006 and 2007 ACC meets.

The Cavalier women were picked to finish second, their finish in last year’s ACC Championship meet. The team, which is ranked No. 10 nationally to open the season, returns four of its scoring five from last year’s ACC squad, including 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year Maria Hauger (Shakopee, Minn.).

The Virginia men, who open the season ranked No. 14 nationally, finished fourth at last year’s ACC Championships. The team returns six of the nine competitors who ran in last year’s race, headlined by All-American Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.).

Virginia opens the 2014 season with the UVa Duals on Friday at Panorama Farms. The 4K men’s and women’s races will begin at 4:30 p.m. and admission is free.
