Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 13 Virginia men’s golf team opens its season Friday, Sept. 5 at the fourth annual Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Ill. The 13-team tournament, hosted by Northern Illinois, will be played at Rich Harvest Farms. The 54-hole event runs through Sunday.
Virginia’s lineup for the season opener will feature senior Ji Soo Park, sophomores Derek Bard and Jimmy Stanger and freshmen Austen Truslow and Danny Walker. Senior All-American Denny McCarthy is not participating in the event while competing for the United States at the World Team Amateur Championships in Japan. McCarthy won the tournament in 2012.
The field for the tournament includes Purdue, Louisville, Marquette, North Texas, UCF, Houston, Lamar, Indiana, Ball State, Ohio State, Northern Illinois and Winthrop.
Last season Virginia placed second in the 15-team field, one shot behind tournament champion UCF. McCarthy led the Cavaliers with a fourth-place showing while Park and Stanger tied for ninth.
