Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia women’s golf team opens its season Sunday at the 12th annual Powerade Cougar Classic to be held Sept. 14-16 at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.

Sunday’s opening round, as well as Monday’s second round, will begin at 8 a.m. off the No. 1 tee. Tuesday’s final round is slated for a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

The yearly event, hosted by the College of Charleston, will feature 10 of the top 25 teams from last season including defending national champion Duke, Arkansas, Baylor, UCF, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, NC State, UNCG, Penn State, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.

Virginia’s lineup will feature senior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.), juniors Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.), sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and freshman Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.).

Coughlin (74.61), Mao (74.88) and Diaz-Yi (74.91) posted UVa’s top three stroke averages last season and helped the Cavaliers to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Szokol is a transfer from Northwestern who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors and helped the Wildcats place 15th at the NCAAs. Anderson won the Virginia State Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur Championship in July.
