Sept. 16, 2014 Hanahan, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team opened its season by tying for fourth place at the 12th annual Powerade Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 4-under 284 during Tuesday’s second round for a 54-hole total of 3-under 861. Mississippi State finished with the same score at the Yeamans Hall Club course.

Virginia’s tournament score was the second lowest in the program’s history. Tuesday’s 18-hole tally tied as the fifth best single-round by a UVa squad.

Arkansas shot a final round 9-under 279 to take the team title at 846. UCLA was second at 853 and Duke was third at 856. The 23-team field included 10 teams ranked in the final top-25 poll last season.

Virginia was led by junior Elizabeth Szokol’s 11th-place finish at 4-under 212. She had rounds of 73, 68 and 71 in her Virginia debut. Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) transferred to Virginia after competing at Northwestern the past two seasons. Her score was better than any 54-hole total she posted as a Wildcat.

Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was 15th at 2-under 214, including a final round score of 2-over 74. Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.), was 22nd at 217. She led the Cavaliers during Tuesday’s play with a 4-under 68. Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) shot 1-under 71 during the final round and finished 26th at 218. Freshman Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) placed 87th at 231 in her collegiate debut.

UVa’s golfers posted three rounds in the 60s during the tournament after scoring in the 60s just three times all of last season. Diaz-Yi’s 2-under 214 was four strokes better any her previous best tournament score.

Duke’s Sandy Choi took medalist honors by one shot at 11-under 205.

Virginia is back in action this weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. The tournament runs Sept. 19-21.
