Kip (Fort Worth, Texas): UVa grad here! Wahoowa! I loved seeing games in Mem Gym. Can you talk about how that atmosphere helps give Virginia a home-court advantage?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I personally love everything about Mem Gym. Although some may find the heat a little too much to handle, I think it gives us a competitive edge over our opponents; we practice cumulatively 9 hours a day in dead heat of August and by the time the season comes around, the heat doesn’t even phase us. In terms of the crowd atmosphere, the close proximity of the fans to the court makes the games loud and intense. Both the heat and the crowd really make for a noticeable home-court advantage.
Marge (Cville): Favorite class at UVA?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I really enjoy all of my classes in my German studies major. I love learning about German history and since it’s such a small major, I know most of the professors and students in the classes really well. Last semester, I took a modern German history class called Neighbors and Enemies with Professor Achilles where we studied the major events in German history from the Franco-Prussian War to today.
Melissa (Poway, CA): Would you rather win a five-set match with a block, kill or a dig that saves the game and leads to the winning point?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: As a middle blocker, my primary job is to block the opponents’ attacks. I don’t think there’s a more exciting play than getting a huge block so I would definitely pick the game-winning block to save the game.
Tom (Towson): Morgan, you ladies have started out hot and have hit some bumps along the way since. What do you have to do as you enter ACC play to pick up steam again? Wahoowa!
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: The start to our season couldn’t have been better. We played hard and found aspects of the game we needed to work on moving forward. Inevitably, teams are subject to the rough patches. It’s difficult to pull ourselves out of it, but we have to come together as a team and get the job done. We know we can get back on track, we just have to focus every minute of every practice and every point of every match. I have no doubt that we’ll come back swinging with the start of ACC play.
Jimmy: What sport would you play if you didn’t play volleyball? It seems like basketball has a lot in common with it! Good luck this weekend!
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I grew up playing basketball, but I just fell in love with volleyball. Since I’ve been here, I’ve gained a profound respect for the rowing team and what they are able to accomplish.
Brianna (Charlottesville): What songs are on your pre-match playlist?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I’m not in charge of the music selection in the locker room, it’s mostly up to Kayla Sears and Jasmine Burton, who know what pump-up tracks to play for us.
Maya , Charlottesville Virginia: When did you first start playing volleyball?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I first started playing volleyball at the recommendation of a classmate of mine whose older sister played volleyball. The sport isn’t quite as popular in New Jersey so many girls start playing pretty late- I didn’t officially start until my freshman year of high school, and played competitively in club by my junior year.
Paul (Arlington): What’s been your proudest athletic achievement to date?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: Last year, we beat Virginia Tech for the first time since 2009. As if the win wasn’t special enough, we beat them on their home court! I will never forget the moment we won that game… It was by far my proudest athletic achievement to date. Oh and by the way, we went on to sweep Virginia Tech on the season for the first time since 2005.
Mary: Hey Morgan! What do you like to do when you’re not in class/playing volleyball?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: The team is very close so we like to hang out a lot outside of volleyball. We go out to dinner, hang around in each other’s apartments, but mainly we just ball 🙂
Jerry (Keswick): What are you going to miss most about the Charlottesville area?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I love how close we are to the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are so many beautiful views- it’s hard to beat. But mainly, I’m going to miss the historic grounds of the University. I feel so lucky to attend school here, and honestly don’t ever want to leave!
Jenny (Culpepper): What kind of profession do you want to pursue after you graduate from Virginia?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I lived in Germany for a few years when I was younger, and have always told myself that I’d end up back in Germany. I’d like to pursue a career that enables me to travel to and from Europe regularly and use my German language skills. Right now, I’m applying to an exchange program internship in Germany with the hopes of landing an eventual career.
Kara (Richmond): What do you plan to be for Halloween?
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: We’re at Clemson the weekend of Halloween, but my teammate Tori Janowski and I have agreed to hold a belated Halloween outing where we dress up as Arnold and Gerald from our favorite 90’s television show, “Hey Arnold!”
team-logo-va.gif spacer.gif Wahoo Central Moderator: That’s all the time we have today, you can check out the Cavaliers in action this weekend at Mem Gym.
10363389.jpeg spacer.gif Morgan Blair: I’ll see you all at our ACC home opener against Clemson this Friday! Go Hoos!
