CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team returns to action at the five-day USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday-Tuesday (Oct. 17-21) at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia will join representatives from 22 other Atlantic Region schools in the tournament. Joining the Cavaliers are: Virginia Tech, Maryland, William & Mary, VCU, Penn State, James Madison, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Liberty, Radford, Temple, UMBC, Navy, Old Dominion, George Washington, St. Joseph’s, Longwood, Duquesne, Delaware, Marshall and Norfolk State.

The winners of the singles and doubles draw will receive automatic berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

In singles, Virginia has three of the top four seeds in the main draw. Junior Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) is the No. 1 seed, junior Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) is the No. 3 seed and sophomore Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) is the No. 4 seed. Junior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) is seeded No. 9-16 and freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) will also compete in the main draw.

The Cavaliers have two of the top five seeds in doubles, including the No. 1 tandem of Nauta and Epstein. Mercer and Morton earned the No. 5 seed.

UVa junior standouts Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and reigning NCAA singles and ITA Atlantic Region singles champion Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) will not compete this weekend.

The tournament will begin Friday at 9 a.m. with a round of qualifying singles followed by the first round of doubles play. The main draw for singles will begin on Saturday morning. Fans can follow the tournament at www.hokiesports.com/wtennis/brackets.
