FLUSHING, N.Y. – Virginia junior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) continued his strong play at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, advancing to the semifinals during Friday’s action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Shane upset two seeded players to reach the semifinals.

Shane took out top-seeded Sebastian Stiefelmeyer of Louisville, the ITA All-American singles champion, 7-6(5), 7-6(1) in the second round to open Friday’s play. He followed that win with a 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) win over sixth-seeded Axel Alvarez Llamas of Oklahoma in the quarterfinals. He will play Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt in Saturday’s semifinals.

Sophomore Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) downed Nathan Pasha of Georgia in the second round, 7-6(4), 6-3, but fell in the quarterfinals to Brayden Schnur of North Carolina, 6-4, 7-6(0).

In doubles, Shane and sophomore Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) downed Will Chappell and Will Stein of TCU in the first round of the consolation draw, 6-4, 7-6(5). They will play Kevin Metka and Ralf Steinbach of Ohio State in the consolation semifinals.

The tournament runs through Sunday at the home of the US Open.

Virginia also has three players competing at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Championships in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. Junior Jonathan Cornish (London, England), sophomore J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and first-year Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) are in the action at the event. Wiersholm has reached the singles quarterfinals, while the duo of Wiersholm and Cornish have advanced to the doubles semifinals.
