CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete Saturday (Nov. 22) at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. It marks the seventh time that both the Cavalier men and women have competed at the NCAA championship meet in the same year.

The women’s 6K race is scheduled for noon and will be followed by the men’s 10K race at 1 p.m. NCAA.com will broadcast the meet and have live results.

Virginia is one of 17 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams competing on Saturday. Nine schools (Arkansas, Colorado, Florida State, Georgetown, Michigan State, Oregon, Providence, Virginia and Wisconsin) had both squads earn automatic bids by finishing in the top two of last week’s regional meets.

The No. 13 Virginia men make their third straight NCAA Championship appearance after winning the NCAA Southeast Regional last week in Louisville. Sophomore Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.) and junior Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) had top-10 finishes at the meet to lead the Cavaliers to their second regional title in three years.

The Cavalier men are making their 13th appearance at the NCAA Championship and are coming off a 13th-place finish last year’s meet. King earned All-American honors in 2013 with an 18th-place finish, the best individual result in program history. The Cavaliers’ best finish at the NCAA Championships was a fifth-place performance in 1984.

The Virginia women enter the meet ranked No. 17 nationally and earned an automatic bid with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Cavaliers had three all-region honorees at the meet, led by graduate students Iona Lake (Norwich, England) and Morgan Kelly (San Francisco, Calif.), who finished third and fourth respectively.

The Cavalier women, making their 14th appearance, claimed the first two NCAA titles in 1981 and 1982. Last year they posted a ninth-place finish at the meet, their first top-10 result since 2001.
