NEW YORK-Virginia swimming sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was honored with the Relay Performance of the Year award at the 2014 Golden Goggle Awards Nov. 24 in New York.

Smith and three Olympic gold medalists, Shannon Vreeland, Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky, were honored for their part in the U.S. women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay that captured gold at the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia, in August.

Smith was the third leg in the Americans’ come-from-behind victory in a Pan Pacific Championship and Australia All-Comers record time of 7:46.40, ahead of Australia (7:47.47) and Canada (7:58.03).

Smith has since been named to represent the U.S. at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan Russia, Aug. 2-15, and the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, July 4-11.

The annual event honors USA Swimming coaches and athletes for their work and performances throughout the year.
