CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 10 Virginia hosts No. 21 South Carolina in non-conference women’s tennis action on Friday, Jan. 30. First serve at Boar’s Head Sports Club is set for 5 p.m.
The Cavaliers (2-1) are coming off a tough 6-1 loss at then-No. 5 Baylor last Saturday (Jan. 24). Juniors Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) were the lone Cavaliers to make the trip due to the flu, which kept several Cavaliers back in Charlottesville. Mercer posted Virginia’s lone point with a victory at No. 4 singles.
Nauta, Morton, Epstein and Mercer rallied short-handed Virginia past then-No. 42 Utah (4-3) in Virginia’s last home match on Jan. 22. The Cavaliers have also defeated VCU (6-1) this season.
In the ITA singles rankings, junior Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) is ranked No. 1, while Nauta is ranked No. 16 and junior Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) is ranked No. 42. Morton and Mercer are ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles, and Elbaba and Nauta are ranked No. 22.
South Carolina owns a 4-1 advantage in the all-time series against Virginia. The Cavaliers posted a 5-2 win over the Gamecocks last season in Charlottesville.
No. 99 Meghan Blevins and No. 120 Elixane Lechemia lead the Gamecocks (4-0), who have posted wins over Grand Canyon, Northern Arizona, Kansas and New Mexico.
