CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 10 Virginia defeated No. 14 USC 4-2 in the opening round of 16 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday (Feb. 6) at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The seventh-seeded Cavaliers improved to 5-1 with the win, while USC suffered its first loss and fell to 3-1. The Cavaliers will play second-seed Florida in the quarterfinals on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 3:30 p.m.

Virginia claimed the doubles point and received singles victories from Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas).

The Cavaliers earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2. Virginia dropped the first match on court one when No. 14 Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis defeated No. 22 Elbaba and Nauta 6-2. Collins and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) posted a 6-2 win over Madison Westby and Gabby Smith on court three before No. 11 Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) and Skylar Morton (Huntington, W.Va.) clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Sabrina Santamaria and Meredith Xepoleas on court two.

No. 42 Collins made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 44 Scandalis on court two. USC got on the scoreboard with No. 45 Westby’s 6-3, 6-4 win over Mercer on court six.

Top-ranked Elbaba increased the UVa margin to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 41 Olmos on court one. USC cut the Cavalier lead to 3-2 with Xepoleas’ 6-4, 7-5 win over Epstein on court five.

No. 16 Nauta clinched the win with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over No. 48 Smith on court three. Morton and Santamaria were deadlocked at 5-5 in a third set on court four when the match was clinched.
