RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 12 Virginia men’s tennis team played its first match outdoors this season, downing No. 31 NC State Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 9-2 (2-0 ACC) with the win, while the Wolfpack fall to 10-5 (0-2 ACC).

“This was a great overall team effort,” said head coach Brian Boland. “Everyone on the team, from top to bottom, contributed today. We played our most complete match of the season and it was great to be outside. NC State is a great, veteran team and we knew we were going to have play well to win.”

The win extended Virginia’s win streak against conference opponents (regular season and tournaments) to 126 consecutive matches, the longest streak in ACC history in any sport.

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles point. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) gave the Cavaliers the early edge by downing 12th-ranked Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster 8-4 at the No. 1 position. The other two matches went to a tiebreaker with Virginia winning both. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) posted an 8-7(3) win at No. 2 over Austin Powell and Simon Norenius. Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) and Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) closed out doubles with an 8-7(7) win at No. 3 over Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel.

In singles, the Cavaliers continued their momentum by winning all six first sets. Aragone wasted little time to double the advantage as he completed a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Weigel. Shane followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position over Mudge. Frank sealed the win with his 6-2, 6-1 victory at the top spot over Powell.

Kwiatkowski extended the advantage to 5-0 with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Beck Bond at No. 4. Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) posted a 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 over Horton and Altamirano finished the sweep at No. 3 where he downed Norenius 7-6(4), 6-2.

Cavaliers continue their road trip Tuesday as they visit top-ranked Oklahoma. Match time in Norman is 5 p.m. ET.
