Awendaw, S.C. – The No. 22 Virginia men’s golf team used a strong closing round to move up to a fourth-place finish at the Hootie @Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 14-under 274 during Tuesday’s final round to close out the 15-team tournament at 12-under 852. UVa’s final round score was the second-best 18-hole total during the 54-hole tournament.

It was Virginia’s second best 18-hole score this season and marked the fourth time this year the Cavaliers have finished a tournament at least 12-under par.

UVa sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) led the Hoos’ charge with a final round score of 6-under 66. He placed fifth overall at 7-under 209. It was his fifth top-10 showing this season in nine tournament appearances.

Senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) used a final round 2-under 70 to improve to 22nd place with a score of 1-over 215. Sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), who also shot 70 on Tuesday, was one stroke behind McCarthy in 29th place.

Freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) posted a final-round effort of 4-under 68 for a 54-hole total of 6-over 222. He completed play in 50th place while senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) was 60th at 226.

Fifth-ranked South Carolina won the event at 26-under 838. The Gamecocks shot 17-under 271 during the final round.

Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Dorn, South Carolina’s Matthew NeSmith and New Mexico’s Gavin Green tied for first at 11-under 205.

The Hoos are off until April 18 when they compete in the Yale Intercollegiate.
