Track & Field Hosts Virginia Challenge Friday and Saturday

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track & field teams will host one of the largest meets in the history of Lannigan Field this week as the Virginia Challenge will take place Friday and Saturday. Over 1,300 athletes from 35 schools will compete during the two-day event.
Both days of the meet will have events throughout the day, capped by top performers in featured events each evening. Friday’s schedule begins at 10 a.m., with Friday’s “Main Event” starting at 6:45 p.m. Saturday’s schedule starts at 9 a.m., with Saturday’s “Main Event” beginning at 7 p.m.
Admission to the meet is free and parking will be available in the University Hall and John Paul Jones Arena lots and the Emmet/Ivy Garage. Live scoring of the meet will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Among the Cavaliers competing during Friday’s “Main Event” are 2014 ACC Champions Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) in the men’s triple jump, Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) in the men’s steeplechase and Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) in the women’s 400m. Also competing is 2015 ACC Indoor Champion Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) in the men’s 400m, and All-Americans Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) in the men’s discus.
Saturday’s schedule includes two Virginia school record holders, Mihaljevic in the men’s shot put and Young in the men’s hammer throw. All-American Kyle Smith (Leola, Pa.) will compete in the men’s javelin, while the track events will feature the 4x400m relays and the distance races (5000m and 10000m).
Next week, the Cavaliers will send athletes to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia before returning home to host their final meet of the season at Lannigan Field, the Virginia Grand Prix on May 8.
