Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. – The No. 27 Virginia men’s golf team is in sixth place after the second round of the NCAA Regional at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. The Cavaliers shot 2-over 290, a seven-shot improvement over their first round score, to stand at 11-over 587.

Oklahoma leads the field at 17-under 559. The 14th-ranked Sooners are followed on the leaderboard by No. 3 Arizona State (581) while No. 10 Georgia Tech (582) is third, No. 39 East Tennessee State (583) is fourth and No. 34 Georgia stands fifth at 585, two shots ahead of Virginia.

The top five teams from the regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships. UVa enters the event as the No. 5 seed.

Senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) continues to lead Virginia and is tied for fifth place at 3-under 141. He shot 3-under 69 during Friday’s round. Sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) is in 23rd place at 147 while classmate Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) is 28th at 148. Bard shot 73 during the second round while Stanger carded a score of 74.

Senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) is in 58th place at 154 and junior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) is 65th at 156.

Arizona State’s Jon Rahm, ranked No. 2 in the nation, leads the field in the race for medalist honors at 7-under 137.

During the final round, Virginia will be paired with East Tennessee State and Georgia. Those teams start at 8:20 a.m. PT from the first tee. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
