Bohan Breaks School Record to Advance in NCAA Shot Put

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Virginia women’s track and field team opened competition Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida. Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) highlighted the first day of the meet for the Cavaliers by breaking her own school record in the shot put to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The top 12 competitors in each event at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships, held June 10-13 at the University of Oregon.
Bohan advanced to her first NCAA Championships with a school record mark of 16.73m (54-10.75) on her final attempt in the shot put. She moved up from 11th to sixth with that mark and secured her ticket to Eugene. The mark eclipsed the school record of 16.31m she had set last month at the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field.
“What Christine was able to do today was impressive,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “For an individual who wasn’t at this meet last year to come here and qualify shows how far she has come. This meet isn’t necessarily about setting records. It is about doing what you did to get here. If you can do that, you are going to be successful at a championship where there is a lot of pressure. For her exceed what she did earlier this year and to break a school record, that is impressive.”
On the track, Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s 400m as she crossed in a time of 52.79. It was the 13th fastest time of the opening round. She will look to be one of the 12 athletes to advance to Eugene in the event on Friday.
“Jordan had the 13th best time today, but if she does what she has done before, she will punch her ticket to Eugene,” said Fetzer. “She just has to run confidently over the last 100 meters.”
The day opened with Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) placing 35th in the women’s javelin with a mark of 43.10m (141-5). In the women’s pole vault, Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) was 23rd, clearing 3.93m (12-10.75). The day concluded with Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) finishing 26th in the 10000m, crossing in a time of 35:18.23.
Joining Lavender on Friday’s schedule for the Cavalier women are Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.), Iona Lake (Norwich, England) and Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.). Chaney will open competition with the first round of the women’s 200m, while Lake and Sargent will look to qualify for Eugene in the 3000m steeplechase.
