Charlottesville, Va. – Atlantic Coast Conference champion Virginia took two of the top three individual awards in the 2015 VaSID All-State Women’s Golf voting released today by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). The team combines players from both the University and College divisions.

Virginia sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was named the VaSID golfer of the year while the Cavaliers’ Kim Lewellen was tabbed as the coach of the year for the second consecutive season. Diaz-Yi was the VaSID rookie of the year in 2014.

This year’s top newcomer honors went to Washington & Lee’s Mary-Frances Hall (State Road, N.C.).

Diaz-Yi was joined on the first team by teammates Brian Mao (Folson, Calif.) and Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.). The first team also featured Old Dominion freshman Maggie Simmermacher (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and William & Mary junior Alessandra Liu (State Road, N.C.). All three UVa players were All-ACC selections in 2015.

A Golfweek All-American, Diaz-Yi led UVa with a 73.21 stroke average, won two tournaments and had four top-10 finishes. She helped Virginia to a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Coughlin was an all-region pick and finished fourth at the ACC Championships. Mao tied for first at the ACCs and helped UVa set a conference scoring mark by winning the title at 27-under 837.

Simmermacher was the C-USA Freshman of the Year and an all-conference pick. She finished fourth at the C-USA Championships. Liu was named All-CAA, setting the Tribe single-season stroke average mark this year.

The second team included three freshmen in addition to UVa’s Elizabeth Szokol and Radford’s Alexandra Austin. The first-year players were Bridgewater’s Christina Herbert, James Madison’s Laura Gomez-Ruiz and Richmond’s Elsa Diaz.

In addition to securing the ACC title, Lewellen led the Cavaliers to a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the team’s seventh appearance at the national tournament in her eight-year tenure in Charlottesville. 2015 VaSID All-State Women’s Golf Team
