CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia field hockey team (1-0) closes out its opening-weekend homestand by hosting No. 7 Penn State (0-1) on Sunday (Aug. 30) at 12 p.m. at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

Admission is free for all of Virginia’s regular-season home field hockey games.

The Cavaliers opened the 2015 season with a 6-0 shutout of Drexel, outshooting the Dragons 21-2. Sophomore midfielder Emilie van Zinnicq Bergmann (Dordrecht, Netherlands) logged her first career hat trick, scoring three goals on six shots. Freshman striker Greta Ell (Plains, Pa.), the lone rookie in the UVa starting lineup, scored her first career goal and added an assist.

Penn State opened its season in Norfolk, Va., falling 2-1 to Old Dominion. Penn State scored first and outshot No. 16 ODU 16-8, but the Lady Monarchs rallied for the victory. Stephanie Hussey scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State leads the all-time series, 16-6, and has won three of the last four match-ups. UVa won 4-2 at Turf Field in 2013.

This is the first of three ranked opponents the Cavaliers will face during their first five games. Virginia will play at No. 15 Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 6 and at No. 12 Louisville on Friday, Sept. 11.

Next up, the Cavaliers begin back-to-back weekend road trips by playing at Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. The Rutgers game will be streamed online as part of the BTN Plus subscription package. The Cavaliers will be back at home on Friday, Sept. 18 when they host No. 5 Duke at 6 p.m. at Turf Field.
